Fun painting samba drums!

I’ve been a drummer in Halifax’s own Samba Nova for 2 years, although it feels like much longer. Our dearly missed previous leader always had a plan to paint all of the drums a uniform colour scheme.
All the bands in Brazil do it and ours were kind of mismatched and a bit beat up. So now Carlos, our new leader who lived and studied samba in Brazil encouraged us to paint the whole set and I jumped right in at the chance to have some fun with creative expression. I’m just doing that large drums for now. These are the surdos.
- I’ve been disassembling them,
- then sanding them to a dull finish,
- cleaning them with hot water,
- painting the base coat of sunshine yellow Krylon spraypaint,
- masking them to paint red bands top and bottom,
- applying a strip of green electrical tape,
- painting stylized hand emblems in green acrylic and then
- top-coating with clear laquer before reassembling them.
What a hoot!
