Sony Minidisc MZ-R700

I bought a Sony Minidisc MZ-R700 digital recorder on ebay for $60, plus a Sony stereo condenser microphone to record pieces by my band Samba Nova

I used the same model borrowed from Jonathan Keijser a couple of weeks ago and the recordings turned out just fine. Mind you, I also borrowed his $700 mics.

This MD is a really great little digital device!

Here’s the microphone I bought to go with it; a great Sony ECM-DS70P stereo condenser unit:

I recorded my Wednesady night rock/blues band with it sounds surprisingly good. The levels and mix are not bad at all despite being done with just this single (stereo) mic.

On Saturday I set it up clamped to the back of a chair to record Samba Nova but sadly the levels aren’t right. It seems overdriven. Speech and single instruments are crystal clear but the surdos (big drums) just blast the levels right off the meter. I am going to foo, around a bit in Sound Forge tonight to see if I can tame it down a bit. The Minidisc unit has an auto-level setting and I thought it was set up for that. If I get some decent files I’ll post them on my samba band site at http://sambanova.org
