Fall salmon fishing

In the late 1980s I spent a fair bit of time on the rivers of Nova Scotia with my fly rod, thrashing the waters in search of the elusive king of fish, Salmo Salar - the atlantic salmon.

I had some success too, although the catching of fish seemed secondary to the contemplative nature of angling. Since then I went on one guided salmon camp adventure on the LaPoile River on the south coast of Newfoundland. It was like being a self indulgent child, with these amazing guys running around to keep us fed like kings, parked at the best fishing spots during the day (when we weren’t napping), and well hydrated in the evenings. I also enjoyed a couple of days on the Castors River on the west coast of Newfoundland in 2003 with my daughter Kate. What a really, really great trip that was.

Yesterday my son Peter and I went out to the West River, Pictou County in Nova Scotia; an hour and a half drive from home. It was as much a scouting-out trip as anything, and Peter had no idea what fly casting was all about. I hope we get out again regularly, as it is so relaxing and enjoyable, especially with good company.

    HELLO

I’VE FISHED NEWFOUNDLAND FOR MANY YEARS THOUGH MOSTLY ON THE AVALON PENINSULA, ALSO THE TERRA NOVA, GANDER, AND HUMBER.
THAT ATL SALMON FISHING IS AN EXPERIANE IN PATIENCE IS A KNOWN TO THOSE OF US WHO LOVE IT.
THOUGH I MUST SAY THAT STANDING DAY AFTER DAY NOT CATCHING A SINGLE FISH IT IS COUNTER BALANCED BY THE TRILL OFTHAT FIRST FISH…….
LATELY THOUGH I’VE BECOME SOMEWHAT HARDENED TO THE “LETS GET THE SPORT STUPID WITH LIQUOR, WITTY STORIES, AND THE — OH IF YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN HERE LAST WEEK STORIES”.
NOW I MAKE IT CLEAR THAT I MAY NOT EXPECT TO CATCH FISH BUT BY THE ETERNAL I WANT TO SEE THEM ALL ABOUT ME. FURTHER TIPS ARE RELATIONAL TO FISH CAUGHT.
IF A GUYS GOING TO BURN 4-6K ON A TRIP I’VE JUST GOT TO BE SURE HE KNOWS THAT I CAN GET DRUNK AND FED REALLY GOOD AT HOME………
    JUST MY TWO CENTS.

    V/R,BOB
